Continuamos observações sobre as biocenoses litorâneas, na parte oeste do Rio de Janeiro, na Enseada mais poluída, onde está a ilha do Pinheiro. Chegamos à conclusão que há graus de estragos acima dos verificados em publicações anteriores, os 7º, 8º, 9º e 10º graus de estragos, com desaparecimento de todas cinturas vegetais. Anotamos os assoreamentos; devido a aterros artificiais na vizinhança, a lama subiu muito, meio metro em 20 anos, ou seja 2,5 centímetros por ano. Apresentamos as alterações ecológicas resultantes do assoreamento, mostramos a mudança de vários nichos de alguns componentes do manguezal. Fizemos 4 mapas ecológicos, em local que constitui a média representativa do que se passou na Enseada de Inhaúma nesses últimos 5 anos. Chegamos a índices de recuperação de zonações do manguezal, como 60/1 para o Avicennietum; e nenhum para o Laguncularietum, comunidade de "mangues mansos" que está em regressão; Houve regeneração das populações de caranguejos Ucides e Cardisoma que voltaram a habitar a Ilha do Pinheiro. Mostramos uma correlação entre o guaiamu e a aroeira da praia, Schinus. Concluímos que: podem ser usadas as técnicas de recuperação de poluição para esses caranguejos e guaiamus, para a alimentação humana, assim como para peixes apanhados em alagados de manguezais poluídos. O material pescado no Rio de Janeiro, tendo algas do gênero Oscillatoria, apresenta um cheiro de urina pútrida, bem como outros cheiros, mas pode ser recuperado para a alimentação humana. Damos sugestões para se utilizar cercados de vegetação de manguezal contra a poluição em locais apropriados, alagados com camarões e peixes, como usam-se na Ásia. As plantas utilizadas baseiam-se no estudo ecológico que estabelece o nicho apropriado a cada uma delas, resistente á poluição, e que pode combater alguns estragos; entre elas as Iresine e as do gênero Avicennia, pois elas promoveram uma pequena recuperação na Ilha do Pinheiro, onde apareceram novamente os caranguejos e guaiamus.

Côr das águas de Sepetiba; as pròpriamente marítimas, pela Escala de Forel e as outras côres aparentes totais feitas por comparação com escalas de SÉGUY e com o Dicionário de Côres de MAERZ & PAUL, 1950. Côr Forel nº6 mostrava no litoral cirrípedes como a Tetraclita squamosa, nas rochas; Águas com a cianofícea planctônica Trichodesmium erythraeum tinham côr de "fôlha de bananeira" ou alpine green. O verde esmeralda mais intenso no local 7, com plancto maciço da diatomácea Coscinodiscus; a parte central da Baía com 150 [quilometros quadrados], cheia de larvas de camarão Penaeus schmidti, águas de cõr de ferrugem nas superfícies das águas; os estuários côr caramelo, isabellinus e bistre. Êste levantamento preliminar serve para comparações futuras, pois a Baía de Sepetiba ainda não é poluída. Futuramente haverá um pôrto de minérios com 3.000.000 de toneladas anuais, cais do pôrto, siderúrgicas e outras indústrias que a poluirão. Várias cõres de águas poluídas da Baía de Guanabara, como águas negras, águas côr de asfalto e outras escurecidas não foram encontradas em Sepetiba. Também não foram encntradas "águas vermelhas" com plancto predominante de dinoflagelados do que já vimos na Baía de Guanabara seguidos de mortandadas de peixes. A fig. 3 mostra as curvas de transparência, e a relação entre côr e transparência é dada para as côres totais aparentes. Foi marcado o coeficiente de extinção da luz K, pelo cálculo a partir do Disco de Secchi. Havendo poluições todos êsses dados que apresentamos deverão ser alterados.

The apparent total color of sea by comparison with samples tested by "MAERZ & PAUL: A Dictionary of Colors, 1950". We find green colors of Forel Scale: Forel n. 5 in waters with Pheophyceae, Sargassum, and Rhodophyceae; Forel n. 6 waters in stones with the Cirripedia, the barnacle Tetraclita squamosa; the alpine green in waters with Trichodesmium exuthraeum. Emerald green in the localities with blooms of the diatom Coscinodiscus. The central portion of the bay, 150 Km[squared] hole-green, full of larvae of shrimps Penaeus schmidti; some shoals of shrimps moves its pleopods and by displacement of botton with diatoms and reddish sediment produces a rust color spot in surface of waters seen by fishermen. The estuaries are Isabell color, and caramel. That is a preliminar survey, to future comparison, because to day Sepetiba Bay is not polluted. But futurelly, it will be polluted by an harbour for 3.000,000 tons of iron ore, and by a quay for cargo boats, and siderurgy mills, airports, and other industries. Several polluted waters of Guanabara Bay are black and asphalt color, and cub color. That colors are not found in Sepetiba Bay to day. In 1965, we do not find the "red waters" and "red tides" with blooms of dinoflagellates in Sepetiba Bay, that they are present sometimes in Guanabara Bay with mortalities of fishes. Sepetiba Bay is not biologic problem, to day, is not polluted. The fig. 3 shows a map of transparence of waters by the disc of Secchi and a relation is given of color and transparence, in Sepetiba: Forel color 5: transparence 2.8 m to 2.9 m; Forel n. 6: 2.0 m; Forel color n. 7: 1.0 m to 1.5 m. Moss green waters: 0.6 to 1.5 m; hellebore green waters: 0.9 to 1.5 m; emerald green waters: 2.0 m to 2.2 m; In Guanabara Bay, into the polluted Enseada de Inhaúma: asphalt color waters: 0.02 - 0.05 m; and in black waters: trasnparence of 1 cm. The extintion koeficient of light is indicated in explanation of the fig. 3.

Observações hidrobiológicas do Lago de Brasília, em 1965, mostraram algas planctônicas Desmidiaceae predominantes, com espécies dos gêneros Staurastrum, Micrasterias, Euastrum, Cosmarium Xanthidium, Bambusina, Closterium, Spondilosium, Penium, principalmente, de águas puras e naturais; conforme o texto, são sêres comuns nas águas indígenas do Brasil Central. Mas a nova capital brasileira cresceu ràpidamente, alcançando oerto de meio milhão de habitantes: a influência do homem se apresentou e, em 1968, já causava outro regime hidrobiológico dentro das faixas de saprobidade, com planctos cosmopolitas indicadores de poluição. Encontramos águas já mesossapróbias com cianofíceas indesejáveis em quantidades maciças, como as Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, a Anacystis cyanea (= Microcystis aeruginosa), Anabaenopsis, Gomphosphaeria e outras. O lago que era "Lago de Desmidiáceas" passou a ser um "Lago de Cianofíceas". Os índices de eutrofização dependem de eutrofizantes no numerador, divididos por desmidiáceas no denominador. Quanto maior o número de algas eutrofizantes, tanto maior a eutrofização; exatamente o que acontece no lago de Brasília. os autores chamam a atenção para os estudos de saprobidade das águas do lago, baseado na teoria que os moluscos Planorbidae se instalem dependentes do regime de poluição mesossapróbio; supõe-se por isso a razão por que êsses moluscos acompanham o homem nas suas migrações. Poder-se-à determinar a faixa de saprobidade em que se instalam os moluscos, suspeitando-se entre os regimes A- e B- mesossapróbio. Propõem medidas preventivas de caráter hidrobiológico para evitar a instalação de planorbídeos. Embora os esgotos sejam todos muito bem tratados sanitàriamente e não há nenhum perigo ou queixa quanto a essa parte; mas é o resultado do tratamento de esgotos e restos de águas usadas pelo homem que fornecem nutritivos às àguas: N, P, Ca, Cl, K, etc. ... e que eutrofizam. A eutrofização normal é ótima; o lago fica produtivo de bom plancto e ótimos peixes. Para eutrofia em excesso, os autores criaram o nôvo têrmo HIPEREUTROFIA, descrevem êsses fenômenos, de ordem geral, com explosivo crescimento da população planctônica e fitoplanto mesossapróbio causador de calamitosos problemas. Pode a "hipereutrofia" ser considerada uma nova e grave "praga das águas" que surgiu depois da 2ª guerra mundial, devido á rápida industralização e explosão populacional do homem. Medidas preventivas contra a hipereutrofia poderão ser conseguidas com planejamentos integrados das bacias dos rios, lagos e baías evitando despejos de excessos de nutrientes, em zonas que fiquem como reservas, preservando a biota aquática natural e normal. É possível tal planejamento no Brasil, porque é um dos poucos países, com bacias de rios e lagos artificiais ainda não poluídos.

The results of hydrobiological observations in the "LAGO DE BRASÍLIA", in 1965, presents that lake as a body water in natural state. The biota of Central Brazil waters presents predominancy of Desmidiaceae, autogenetic indigenous plankton, and for example, with species of the genus; Staurastrum, Micrasterias, Euastrum, Cosmarium, Xanthidium, Bambusina, Closterium, Spondilosium, Penium and others, of natural waters. They may be seen, by its latin names, in italic types, in portuguese pages. However, the city of Brasilia has abruptly develloped, in few years arrived to 500.000 inhabitants, in 1968. The influence of the man, and the quantities of his urban nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Cl, etc. ...) has changed the habitat from a natural lake of desminds (1965) to a lake of Cyanophyceae (1968); with blooms of Aphanizomenon flosaquae, Anacystis cyanea (= Microcystis aeruginosa) Anabaenopsis, Gomphosphaeria, and others blue-algae. the eutrophication index has increased. In accordance with the theory that the Planorbidae mollusks appears from the A-mesosaprobic zone to the B-mesosaprobic one, is supposed a argument because this mollusks followed the migrations of the man; so it is possible to make determinations of the degree of saprobity of waters during the beggining of iniciatory communities of Planorbidae, by hydrobiologic and limnological continuatives studies of the habitat. The authors recommend to take preventive measures as a biologic control over quality of waters of the lake preventing the forthcomming of the molluks of the Schistosomosis. Sanitarity Brasilia sewage is well treated, to protect health and there are no anti-hygienic menaces, but its mineralized nutrients as N, P, K, Ca, Cl, etc. ...provokes great devellopment of blue-algae. The normal eutrophication is excellent producer of nice chlorophyceae plankton and fishes. The authors suggest a new word "HYPEREUTROPHY" for the big and exagerate eutrophication, blowing up tremendous development of phytoplankton, mainly blue-algae. "Hipereutrophy" is without possibility of recovery of normal condictions in waters, without macroscopic life, with turbidity, without self-purification, fomented by enormous source of food supply, artificially produced by man, resulting in continuous blooms of phytoplankton. "Hypereutrophy" is the new name, for a new calamity of waters, condictioned by the impetuosity of the industrialization, and the sudden human populational explosion after the 2nd. world-war. Preventives against the hypereutrophy is proposed in taking indispensable measures by the integrated planning of the rivers and lake basins, providing forestal waters, lakes, and rivers reserves for nature protections. This is possible in a country as the Brazil, because is a nation which is possessor of very big rivers basins, and artificial lakes, yet in indigenous and natural state.

The engineers of the modern University City are constructing a graceful bridge, named PONTE OSWALDO CRUZ, that crosses a portion of the Guanabara Bay (Fig. 1). The work at west pillar stopped for 3 years (The concret structure in Est. 1). As it will be seen from n.º 1 — 5 of the fig. 1, Est. I, the base of the structure will have five underground boxes of reinforcement, but, to-day they are just like as five uncovered water ponds, until at present: May 1963. (Est. I — fig. 3, n.º 3 — pond n.º 3; A. — old level of the water; B.— actual level of the water; c.— green water; E.— mass of bloom of blue algae Microcystis aeruginosa). Soon after SW portion, as 5 cells in series, of the pillar abutments, and also the NE portion nearly opposite in the Tibau Mount will be filled up with earth, a new way will link Rio City and the University City. We see to day Est. I, fig. 1 — the grasses on the half arenous beach of the Tibau Point. These natural Cyperaceae and Gramineae will be desappear because of so a new road, now under construction, when completed will be 33 feet above the mean sea level, as high as the pillar, covering exactly as that place. Although rainfall was the chief source of water for these ponds, the first water (before meterorological precipitations of whatever first rain it might fall) was a common tap water mixed with Portland Cement, which exuded gradually through the pores of the concret during its hardenning process. Some data of its first cement water composition are on the chemical table, and in Tab. n.º 4 and "Resultado n.º 1". The rain — receiving surface of each pond were about 15 by 16 feet, that is, 240 square feet; when they were full of water, their depth was of 2 feet 3", having each pond about 4,000 gallons. Climatic conditions are obviously similar of those of the Rio de Janeiro City: records of temperature, of precipitation and evaporation are seen on the graphics, figs. 2, 3, 4. Our conceptions of 4 phases is merely to satisfy an easy explanation thus the first phase that of exudation of concrete. We consider the 2nd. phase formation of bacterian and cyanophycean thin pellicel. 3rd. phase - dilution by rains, and fertilisation by birds; the 4th phase - plankton flora and fauna established. The biological material arrived with the air, the rains, and also with contaminations by dusts; with big portion of sand, of earth, and leaves of trees resulted of the SW wind actions in the storming days (See - Est. I, fig. 3, G. - the mangrove trees of the Pinheiro Island). Many birds set down and rest upon the pillar structure, its faeces which are good fertilizers fall into the ponds. Some birds were commonly pigeons, black ravens, swallows, sparrows and other sea mews, moor hens, and a few sea birds of comparatively rare occurence. We get only some examples of tropical dust contaminated helioplankton, of which incipient observations were been done sparcely. See the systematic list of the species of plankters. Phytoplankters - Cyanophyta algae as a basic part for food of zooplankters, represented chiefly by rotiferse, water-fleas Moinodaphnia and other Crustacea: Ostracoda Copepoda and Insecta: Chironomidae and Culicidae larvae. The polysaprobic of septic irruptions have not been done only by heating in summer, and, a good reason of that, for example: when the fifth pond was in polysaprobic phase as the same time an alike septic phase do not happened into the 3rd. pond, therefore, both were in the same conditions of temperature, but with unlike contaminations. Among the most important aquatic organisms used as indicatiors of pollution - and microorganisms of real importance in the field of sanitary science, by authorities of renown, for instance: PALMER, PRESCOTT, INGRAM, LIEBMANN, we choose following microalgae: a) The cosmopolite algae Scenedesmus quadricuada, a common indicator in mesosaprobio waters, which lives between pH 7,0 and it is assimilative of NO[3 subscripted] and NH[4 subscripted]. b) Species of the genus Chlamydomonas; it is even possible that all the species of theses genus inhabit strong-mesosaprobic to polysaprobic waters when in massive blooms. c) Several species of Euglenaceae in fast growing number, at the same time of the protozoa Amoebidae, Vorticellidae and simultaneous with deposition of the decaying cells of the blue algae Anacystis cyanea (= Microcystis) when the consumed oxygen by organic matter resulted in 40 mg. L. But, we found, among various Euglenacea the cosmopolite species (Euglena viridis, a well known polysaprobic indicatior of which presence occur in septic zone. d) Analcystis cyanea (= M. aeruginosa) as we observed was in blooms increasing to the order of billions of cells per litter, its maximum in the summer. Temperatures 73ºF to 82ºF but even 90ºF, the pH higher than 8. When these blue algae was joined to the rotifer Brachionus calyflorus the waters gets a milky appearance, but greenished one. In fact, that cosmopolite algae is used as a mesosaprobic indicator. Into the water of the ponds its predominance finished when the septic polysaprobic conditions began. e) Ankistrodesmus falcatus was present in the 5th pond from 26the. April untill the 26th July, and when N.NH[4 subscripted] gets 1.28 mg. L. and when chlorinity stayed from 0.034 to 0.061 mg. L. It never was found at N.NH[4 subscripted] higher than 1 mg. L. The green algae A. falcatus, an indicatior of pollution, lives in moderate mesosaprobic waters. f) As everyone knows, the rotifer eggs may be widely dispersed by wind. The rotifer Asplanchna brightwelli in our observation seemed like a green colored bag, overcharged by green cells and detritus, specially into its spacious stomach, which ends blindly (the intestine, cloaca, being absent). The stock of Asplanchna in the ponds, during the construction of the bridge "PONTE OSWALDO CRUZ" inhabits alkaline waters, pH 8,0 a 8,3, and when we observed we noted its dissolved oxygen from 3.5 to 4 mg. L. In these ponds Asplanchna lived in 0,2 P.PO[4 subscripted]. (Remember the hydobiological observations foreign to braslian waters refer only from 0.06 to 0,010 mg. L. P.PO[4 subscripted]; and they refer resistance to 0.8 N.NH[4 subscripted]). By our data, that rotiger resist commonly to 1.2 until 1.8 mg. L.N.NH[4 subscripted]; here in our ponds and, when NO[2 subscripted] appears Asplanchna desappears. It may be that Asplanchna were devoured by nitrite resistant animals of by Culicidae or other mosquitoes devoured by Due to these facts the number and the distribution of Asplanchna varies considerabley; see - plates of plankton successions. g) Brachionus one of the commonest members of class Rotatoria was frquently found in abundance into the ponds, and we notice an important biological change produce by the rotifer Brachonus colyciflorus: the occurence of its Brachionus clayciflorus forms pallas, is rare in Brazil, as we know about this. h) When we found the water flea MOinodaphnia we do not record simultanous presence of the blue algae Agmenellun (= Merismopedia).

In brackish waters of a creek of Guanabara Bay, the author points by the first time the presence of Chlamydomonas reinhardi, Eutreptia lanowi, Oscillatoria putrida, O. limosa, O. chlorina that were unknown in our waters; such biologic indicators proved themselves pollutional conditions, so bad a stark-mesosaprobic regime. Other news are plankton analysis by the Standar methods, of two most expressive samples of water masses;also the mobility of the plankters are measured in micra by second.
